What South Carolina State University means to Black South Carolinians and why students pushed back
This piece is personal for me. My family’s roots at South Carolina State University run deep, from the Orangeburg Massacre to the classrooms and community that helped shape my life.
I wrote about why the students were right to speak up, why leadership failed them, and why South Carolina still hasn’t fully reckoned with what it owes Black institutions.

It is extremely gratifying to see college students, in this case SC students protesting and standing for justice and for their school and it’s reputation. I am proud and relieved to read this story. It gives me hope for the future.
