AfroTech is a hub for Black S.T.E.M professionals, innovators, entrepreneurs, & visionaries. It was founded in 2016 by Blavity Inc. and aims to inspire future Black leaders within the tech industry where Black professionals are significantly underrepresented. Black workers accounted for just 7.4 percent of the high-tech workforce and 5.7 percent of high-tech managers, despite making up nearly 12 percent of the total U.S. workforce, according to U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Starting on November 1st, SNAP (food stamps) benefits will reportedly run out of funding, affecting more than 40 million Americans, or about 10% of the country. This despite the fact that the federal government could easily appropriate funds to continue the SNAP program through November. This is a result of the federal government shutdown which will soon be the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

This shutdown is doing damage to American’s faith in our own government. With Democrats poised to take control of the House in 2026, what responsibility do they have to restore that trust deficit?

And in the meantime, wtf do WE do?!? Our hosts discuss how folks are standing in the gap and supporting our communities even when the government won’t.

On episode 104 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers go through this week’s election results and take an account of how our Black candidates (and voters) performed.

The race for NYC’s mayor dominated the airwaves, where Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won. BUT there were other important races. Black mayors were elected across the country, the governor race in Virginia and New Jersey went solidly Democratic, and State-level elections in the South saw typically conservative seats flip blue. Folks are wondering if Mamdani is the new “face of the Democratic party” which WE think is missing the point.

NLP is joined by President Biden’s former press secretary (the first Black woman to hold the job) Karine Jeane-Pierre to discuss some of the election results and Democrat’s media strategy. In her new book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside Party Lines, Karine shares some pointed critiques of a party she no longer identifies with, and our hosts ask some pointed questions of Karine.

And our hosts respond to your questions! There’s an interesting one about infiltrating the Republican party and another from a chef asking who is keeping our legacy “recipes.”
